Top 5 Knots for Running Shoes

Runners Knots

If you’re a runner, there’s nothing worse than being in the groove and your shoe comes untied. Not only is it annoying, but it’s also a safety hazard. You don’t want to be tripping and falling out on your daily jog! On top of all that, if you’ve experienced discomfort in your shoes, it could be due to how you’ve laced and tied them.

A loosely tied or improperly tied shoe can lead to blisters and other foot problems, as well. So, how should you tie them? Using the following 5 knots can help you on your run:

  1. Double Slip Knot
  2. Shoemaker’s Knotor Turquoise Turtle
  3. Surgeon’s Knot
  4. Reef Knot or Square Knot
  5. The Runner’s Knot

There are many good knots for tying your shoes and I think one of the following knots will help you keep your shoes from coming untied. These knots can be helpful for runners if their laces come loose during the run.

They are known for being secure enough to stay tied all day. Some shoelaces are more slippery than others, so if one doesn’t work try another one. Lacing and tying your shoes well can relieve pressure points in your foot and keep your shoe snug. Let’s take a look at the knots.

1. Double Slip Knot

  • This knot style may seem similar to the classic square or granny knot but is much more secure. Many people tie all of their shoes with this style on a daily because it keeps their shoes from becoming untied.
  • Tie your shoe in a crossover starting knot, and then use double loops that cross over each other going in the opposite direction through the hole created.
  • To make this knot, do the following:
    1. Start by crossing both laces over to create a basic knot, and make two bunny ear loops.
    2. Cross them and bend them over each other.
    3. Bring the loop tips through the created hole in opposite directions.
    4. Pull the loops tight to create the double knot.

Now you should be ready to go running without worrying about your laces!

2. Shoemaker’s Knot [Turquoise Turtle]

  1. If the basic double knot isn’t the right knot for you, you can try out the shoemaker’s knot. This knot style is not as popular but will be just as secure.
  2. To make this knot, do the following:
    1. Start by crossing both laces over to create a basic knot.
    2. Make two loops, like bunny ears.
    3. Cross the right loop over the left, bend it over, and pull it throw the hole loosely.
    4. Pull the left lace end through the hole also and wrap the right loop over and through the hole one more time.
    5. Once looped around, pull both loops snug.

Know you have another secure knot that should stay secure in most any condition.

3. Surgeon’s Knot

  • The surgeon’s knot is like tying a simple knot most people learn when they’re young, but it includes another wrap through the hole for a more secure knot.
  • To make this knot, do the following:
    1. Start by crossing both laces over to create a basic knot.
    2. Once you have your basic knot, make a loop with the right lace.
    3. Wrap the left lace over and around the loop loosely and push the middle of that same lace through the hole that was created, thus making another loop.
    4. Take that new loop and wrap it around and into the hole once more.
    5. Pull your loops to tighten the knot.
  • When it’s done, it will look like a classic shoelace knot but will be more secure.

4. Reef Knot [Bowed Square Knot]

  • The reef knot is usually done without loops, but if you use loops it becomes a standard square knot. This knot is useful if your shoes have very short laces, or you want to lace your shoes fast. You’ll start with your classic knot tying style, then loop it through the middle.
    4. Pull your loops to tighten the knot.
  • This knot should be snug and secure enough to stay in place while you’re running. For the fastest way to tie this knot see fieggen.com.

5. The Runner’s Knot

  • Last, but knot least, we have the runner’s knot. This knot is built to keep your shoe snug at the top to keep you from getting potential foot pain from running. It will help to decrease pressure on your foot while keeping your shoe from slipping off.
  • To make this knot, do the following:
    1. When you’re lacing your shoes, leave the top eyelets open to create this knot.
    2. Typically, you would cross the laces over and put them through the eyelets. For this knot style, lace them through the eyelet directly above and make a loop
    3. Bring the lace from each side over to insert into the opposite loop
    4. After you pull on the laces through the loops, tie your laces normally.
  • This style will relieve the pressure that can build up from tying your laces tightly right against your foot. The initial loops create a barrier, making this a great knot style for runners, hence the name.

To sum things up, try one or two of the knots shown above to find a knot that works for you. You don’t want to stress about learning something new that will take a lot of time. Take your time to find one that you can do easily and that will keep your feet snug in your shoes.

The important thing is to remember that you want your foot to be held in place and to be supported. Try to avoid unwanted pressure from the shoe or laces. When you have decided on a knot type, make sure you have proper laces and lacing, as well.

There are many lace styles out there for you to choose from. Try out one of these knots to see what works!
