Whether you are looking for a new challenge, if you are bored of your current running shoes, do you have an injury that isn’t getting better or are you just chasing the latest craze. Once you realize your reason for switching, think about whether it’s worth it or not.

If you have decided to switch to barefoot/minimalist shoes, the next step is to consult your doctor, podiatrist, or sports medicine specialist. Discuss with them in detail and let them decide if it is beneficial or harmful for you.

In traditional shoes, you experience a heel-striking gait, while in barefoot/minimalist shoes, you experience forefoot or midfoot striking. The difference is that forefoot/midfoot-striking puts more strain on your Achilles tendon that may lead to injury.

  • Also, a high-end style would not be a suitable choice for a beginner since they are overpriced.
  • For flat feet, I recommend a pair with increase arch support.

1. Let Your Feet Get Accustomed 

Do not start running in your new minimalist shoes; first, practice walking in your new shoes. If you are going for barefoot shoes, you need to toughen your feet’ soles by standing on gravel, then start running on soft surfaces like grass, wet sand, or rubberized track.

2. Practice The Change In Your Running Mechanics

Do not land on your heel; instead, practice landing on midfoot or forefoot. Don’t worry if your heel contacts the ground but focus on striking midfoot first.

Go on short walks initially and then run with an app to measure your stride cadence. Make sure your landings are quiet, relaxed, and gentle. Also, avoid slapping the ground with the soles of your feet.

3. Add Barefoot Walking To Your Routine

Adding barefoot time to your walking routine can help you a lot in smooth and injury-free transitioning.

Try to spend at least one hour barefoot just walking around the house. This will help you in strengthening your foot and core muscles and conditioning the soles of your foot.
